Competing With MLA - Could This Be You?

It’s been a busy few months for our community and team on the comp floor! They have competed in the UK, in Europe and in Asia. We want to celebrate their achievements, and inspire more of you to join in on the fun and compete for MLA for the rest of the year.

Why compete?

It may seem daunting, but anyone can compete at functional fitness competitions. Not only do you get to put your fitness to the test, but also meet new people and get out of your comfort zone. You may just find out something new about yourself. It can help you grow confidence and set new goals too.

Take a look at what went down amongst our own team and community!

Team MLA at the Turf Games Summer Festival

We’re so proud of our community team in the Mixed Intermediate category: Dan Salter, Alex Monari, Jamie Moles, Nelly Koenig, Lauren Tai, and our very own Tyla Sullivan - they all competed as part of Team MLA and took 50th place out of 198 teams! It was amazing to watch them throw down.

Florence Wong at the CrossFit Games Asia Semifinals

Our very own Flo Wong came 15th in the Individual Women CrossFit Games Asia SemiFinals! What a champ.

- How was it Flo?

"This was my 2nd semifinals, I came back more mature as an athlete - better prepared mentally, physically and logistically (huge shout out to my coach, boyfriend and sponsors for making it all happen so smoothly). The highs (1 top 5 finish and 1 top 10 finish) and lows (disappointed in my last workout) are to be expected, but overall this season and comp showed me that things are going in the right direction. I am also proud to represent Hong Kong again, in an ever more competitive field! There were a couple of events that I thought I would do quite badly in and was as a result quite nervous about, but they turned out to be pretty ok. Just shows that staying in my lane and trusting my abilities work! I'm taking the wins and lessons away to work on this off season".

Tali Vaisbart at the Malta Throwdown
This was our Friend of MLA Tali's first individual RX comp, we're incredibly proud of her!

- How was it Tali?

“Malta Throwdown was well and truly a roller coaster of emotions. Qualifying Rx was unexpected and it being my first individual Rx competition, first international comp, first 3 day comp and first comp in the heat; the nerves got the better of me on day 1. I crumbled in an event that I should have done well in; leaving me very disappointed in myself. After reflection came back on day 2 and executed everything as planned, with the highest finish in the run event of 4th. Overall the comp was super well organised, great event selection (very versatile and challenging) and a very good experience. I can well and truly say I walked away having learnt a lot and I am excited for what's to come in 2023/2024.”

Julia Lim & Team Sleven Fitness at Strength in Depth
Our Friend of MLA Julz and her team from Sleven Fitness competed at Strength In Depth as a team of four. Super proud of them!

- How was it Julz?

"We came 17th out of 50 teams after 3 days of competition ranging from CrossFit workouts with gymnastics, olympic weightlifting and the worm, as well as an outdoor run and lake swimming. It was really well run and lots of variety in workouts.

It was really challenging and there were lots of really good teams and athletes which meant we had to work hard in all the workouts and couldn’t make many mistakes. We really enjoyed competing together as a team and we also got to go with other members from Sleven Fitness which made the experience more enjoyable.

It’s always great at these events as you see lots of people and get to catch up with so many friendly faces. I look forward to hopefully competing there again next year!"

Ella Wilkinson at Strength in Depth

Our Friend of MLA Ella came second in the Elite Female category at Strength In Depth. Well done Ella!

- How was it Ella?

“I had an amazing weekend! I loved being back on the competition floor and putting everything I’d been working on to the test. I thoroughly enjoyed each event and trying out new things. I was buzzing to finish in second but even more happy to see everything heading in the right direction for next year's season.”

Aoife Burke at the CrossFit Games Europe Semifinals

Our Friend of MLA and Training Camp coach Aoife has been working incredibly hard. This year she came in the top 50 women in Europe, having competed at the Europe Semifinals!

Last but not least… Kelly Friel returning to the CrossFit Games

We’re so proud to have Kelly Friel join our Friends of MLA! Kelly is a mum, wife,  gym owner, coach and currently one of the most successful master athletes in the UK. She brought home silver medals from the CrossFit Games  in 2018/2019.  In 2021 and 2022 she was crowned the Fittest on Earth. Kelly returns to the Games this August to claim her crown as Fittest Master again!
