Why Choose a Fitness Retreat in Madeira?

The Land

Madeira is so much more than a beautiful island. Because of the formation of the land, it’s a natural playground for anyone who loves training outdoors. The dramatic landscape, which features endless peaks, valleys and cliffs across the island, is a perfect backdrop for a fitness retreat holiday where you’ll find challenge and relaxation in equal measure.

In short, the island is tailor-made for movement. There are over 500 hiking trails that suit all abilities, from flat, leisurely walks to more demanding treks such as the famous Pico to Pico trail. So it’s no surprise that the island has become a hub for fitness and wellness retreats. The volcanic formation has created steep mountains which see hikers, runners and cyclists alike tackling the peaks. The sheer abundance of waterfalls and gorges means canyoning is a must-try if you want a side of adrenaline to accompany the stunning scenery.

The Ocean

We can’t talk about Madeira without talking about the coastline, which adds an experience in itself to any fitness retreat.

There are natural volcanic rock pools dotted across the island, which are perfect for wild swimming and an introduction to cold water therapy. You’ll also find calmer coves for stand-up paddle boarding.

Experienced surfers can also find their surf fix on select stretches of the coastline on the north and south coast.

If you’re looking for something slower but equally immersive, you can also try scuba diving. Not initially what you’d equate with mindfulness, but it really is a unique way to relax your body and mind by slowing your breathing as you explore the underwater world around the island’s coastline. Our dive partners offer a variety of experiences, from shallow coastal dives to shipwreck explorations further out to sea.

The diversity of activities you’ll find in Madeira means your wellbeing retreat can be as active or as restorative as you need. You may be joining us for more of a fitness retreat, or perhaps you’re looking to reset with a health retreat by simply escaping to nature. Whatever your intentions, Madeira is the ultimate destination for fitness holidays.

The Best Time to Visit Madeira

Madeira has a subtropical climate which sees hot summers and mild winters, usually with year-round blue skies and sunshine.

  • Spring is a great time for visiting Madeira and spending as much time outdoors as possible, so if you love training outdoors, consider a shoulder season trip. The incredible green scenery is in full swing, the trails are quieter, and temperatures are comfortable for long-distance hikes or walks.

  • Summer sees long days and warmer temperatures, but it can also be busy with tourists. We usually avoid running retreats in these months and opt for Spring or Autumn instead.

  • Autumn is far less crowded, so it’s a great time to explore the island. The days are still warm but not overly hot, and it’s one of our favourite times to hike the various trails.

  • As the cold hits mainland Europe, the winter months in Madeira are mostly mild and therefore a great time to continue being out in nature.  Christmas and New Year are a special time in Madeira, with the city streets laced in fairy lights and a spectacular fireworks show on New Year’s Eve. So spectacular that it’s been a Guinness World Record Holder since 2006 for the ‘Greatest Fireworks Show in the World.’

Part of the magic of Madeira is its microclimates, so it might be raining on one part of the island whilst it’s sunny just 15 minutes away. It’s always a lot cooler up on the mountain peaks than it is on the beach, and can change from one moment to the next – so never trust a weather app! Just make sure you have layers for the changes that the microclimate may bring.

Whatever time of year you visit Madeira, the island’s cultural calendar is full of events throughout the year. From Carnival celebrations in February to the Atlantic Festival in June, and the Wine Festival in August, there are always things to explore beyond the outdoors. You can visit the full calendar of events here.

The Best Things to Do in Madeira

Madeira is tiny but mighty. It’s only 35 miles long and 13 miles wide, but has so much to do, particularly if you’re an adventurous person.

The views across the island are unforgettable, with 180-degree views of the ocean – perfect if you need moments of peace, quiet and calm. Madeira also offers incredible local cuisine; think fresh seafood, tropical fruits and of course the pastel de nata.

Outdoor Adventures

Hiking is one of the island’s biggest draws, with hundreds to choose from. The iconic Pico to Pico trail links the island’s two highest peaks and offers jaw-dropping views of the island, whereas the Risco Waterfall & 25 Springs hike offers an easy to moderate and incredibly scenic walk, perfect for large groups. It really doesn’t matter what age or ability you are; we can guarantee you’ll find a walk or hike that suits you. The annual UltraX Madeira ultramarathon is a must for serious endurance athletes, with a gruelling but unforgettable challenge through the island’s rugged terrain.

Thrill seekers can also take advantage of the tall peaks and give paragliding a try – it’s a popular activity across the island thanks to the sheer drops, which aren’t for the faint of heart.

For those who strength train or follow a CrossFit or functional fitness programme, Box Naval is our go-to gym on the island. They’re also the organisers of the Madeira Games, a CrossFit competition which sees people from all over Europe descend on the island for three days of fitness and adventure.

If you’re more drawn to water than the mountains, Madeira doesn’t disappoint. The coastline is dotted with natural rock pools perfect for wild swimming, and the island is a popular spot for stand-up paddleboarding, canyoning, and even whale watching.

Surfing in Crete is possible too, though it’s best suited for the experienced surfers amongst us.

Local Cuisine

We have to touch on the culture of Madeira too, which is just as rich as its scenery. The island has a long history of sugar and wine production, and you can still taste both today, along with traditional dishes like espetada (barbecued meat on skewers, a great post-workout protein hit) and the local citrusy Poncha, a traditional, frothy alcoholic drink made with sugar cane rum, honey and lemon or orange juice.

Work from Madeira as a Digital Nomad

Madeira has also become a hub for digital nomads in recent years, with the capital Funchal attracting more and more remote workers. The local government has even set up a pilot project to attract more nomads to the island.

TESTIMONIALS

  • “This was an superbly organised adventure holiday on a magical island. Madeira is only 3.5hrs from London but it almost tropical with its lush greenery, beautiful mountains in the middle of the ocean. I hiked until I looked down into clouds nestled between the mountains and loved paddle boarding. We enjoyed tree planting with Friends of Madeira and topped it off with a refreshing dip in the natural pools. Thank you MLA!”
