Our Open weekends - your questions answered!

Hey team!

Following our recent social posts, we thought we would give some more details on our upcoming Open weekends. Drop us a line if we left anything obvious out!

Why get away in the middle of the Open?

The CrossFit Open is five weekends long; this year it will run from October 10th to November 10th. It is by far the longest CrossFit competition and it can leave us in need of rest and recovery.

In the middle of November, when work is relentless and you are getting ready for the party season, we want you at peak health, not needing a break.

We are doing two Open workouts in an unspoilt setting, to balance out the intensity of the competition with time to retreat in nature. The aim is that you come back fresh and ready to tackle the weeks that follow.

Will I crush my workout ?

You will have more time than usual to prepare. Rather than 'turn up, go hard', we will watch parts of the Open announcement on Friday morning and offer a few different strategies from @bigdawgsathlete that will help you give your best effort.

I have never done the CrossFit Open before and it sounds intimidating. Are these weekends for me?

To visualise the CrossFit Open, if this is your first one, imagine doing an intense workout, with your friends cheering you on and one of them counting your reps and time.

To visualise the rest of the trip, imagine having a dedicated time and place to work on various skills with a coach, as well as time to retreat and refresh your soul.

If any of the below sounds like you, we believe you will love our Open weekends.

  • You are a member of a CrossFit gym, whether you have just started or are a seasoned athlete.

  • You have been training in a sport for a while.

  • You follow a strength and conditioning or strongman programme in a gym, on your own or in a group.

  • You do high-intensity functional fitness classes at a class-only gym.

We will scale the workout to each individual. There is no pressure to record your score; we simply want you to give your best effort.

Will I have to go on a special diet?

We will eat delicious fresh local food to support our training. Liam at @ph_nutrition has planned for us balanced meals and post-workout treats.

It wouldn’t be the Open without beers and a celebratory meal, so we are having dinner on the beach under the stars every night and a more indulgent meal on the Friday.

I am not too fussed about the Open workout, but I want to come out to train. What training will I be doing?

Olympic Lifting, gymnastics, trail running as well as a waterski taster - if you are up for it!

What are we doing to relax?

Long uninterrupted sleep on our organic cotton bedding! Our recovery plan will include a massage session, as well as twice-daily beachfront yoga, paddle-boarding (*weather permitting) and a mountain hike.

Will I need to video my workouts?

The gym at Fig Tree Villa is now affiliated as CrossFit Plaka so you will submit your scorecard for validation at the end of the workout, as usual.

Can I repeat the workout if I want to get a better score? When can I do that?

You can certainly repeat your workout on the Sunday if you want to. Otherwise, we would love you to join in the beach workout!

I am injured. Can I still come?

If you are currently able to train around the injury, let us know what it is and we will adapt your training accordingly.

All right I’m sold! Get me to these weekends!
